Improved Google Search with “Fact Check”

Google has incorporated another feature to the search adding ‘Fact Check’ tag. This is aimed at viewers coming down to better conclusions about the content they want to know about. Introduced in October 2016, it was first available for Google News. Now, this has been extended to the main search results.

What is Fact Check?

•    Any content such as a news article or any other piece of information which a viewer searches comes with a fact check tag. Various news publishers and fact checking organizations claim their facts about that information.

•    It is represented as a snippet which shows information about who made the claim and to what degree the claim is true.

•    This allows the viewer to judge more rationally on the subject and he is not just left confused about the validation of the content which comes as search result.

Who provides these facts?

It’s really nice to have these facts attached to google searches, but the question is who is claiming these facts and their provided information is validated on what grounds

•    There is a strict set of criteria which a publisher should fulfill-

a)    Schema.org Claim Review markup on pages where public statements are being checked.

b)    Publisher should be algorithmically determined to be an authoritative source of information.

c)    Google News General Guidelines, Google News Publisher criteria- accountability, transparency and readability standards.

Glitches with Fact Check

•    This functionality is not available for every search.
•    Different publishers may give different conclusions for the same claim- Still, Google believesthe functionality will help make people better judgements.
